SolarCoin is a cryptocurrency that incentivizes a solar-powered planet.

Solar energy is now the cheapest fuel in over 150 countries.

We want to make it free.

Rewards drive action.

We distribute SolarCoin as a reward to solar installations. When the value and price of a SolarCoin exceed the production cost of the energy, it becomes effectively free – an event we call the Solarity.

As of today, cryptocurrencies are worth over US$2 trillion. Most of that value was distributed in exchange for carbon-intensive crypto mining. What if it was given out to people who produced energy for free?

Our goal and 40-year mission since 2014 is to incentivize solar electricity production by rewarding the generators to reduce the cost of electricity production.

Solar energy is now produced at below US$12/MWh on some parts of the planet, and the cost keeps dropping.

SolarCoin builds a foundation for the global energy transition by rewarding solar producers with an energy-referenced currency. Economic research on SolarCoin is here.

How it works

Earning SolarCoin

Solar energy producers file a claim to register their solar installation via their monitoring system or platform. Claimants download an Ethereum-compatible wallet like Metamask to create a receiving address that acts like a bank account.

The monitoring system sends generation to the SolarCoin Foundation, who in turn sends SolarCoins to the Claimant’s wallet at a rate of 1 SolarCoin per 1 MWh of verified electricity production. Claimants can save, exchange, or spend SolarCoins as they wish, and may receive ongoing grants over the next 20-30 years they generate energy.

Spending SolarCoin

SolarCoins are sent to addresses (accounts) in digital wallets and used as currency. SolarCoin can be traded for government currencies on cryptocurrency exchanges, or spent at businesses that accept them.

Claiming SolarCoin

Filing a Claim

The recommended method is for claimants to file directly via their monitoring company’s portal. If your energy monitoring platform doesn’t verify SolarCoin, reach out to support@solarcoin.org and we will work to enroll your platform.

If your platform doesn’t support direct filing yet, you can file a claim yourself at https://claim.solarcoin.org.

*Note: If you previously filed a claim yourself, your claim data has been migrated to the new system. Please use the password reset functionality with the email you used when filing the claim.

Wallet Software

SolarCoin is compatible with any Ethereum wallet that supports the Energy Web Chain. Many claimants use Metamask.

Receiving your SolarCoin

Claims are reviewed prior to the initial grant. Upon approval, claimants will receive an initial grant with a retroactive 5-year lookback, then periodic grants every 6 months for the life of the installation.

Prior Holders of SolarCoin (now SolarCoin Classic)

As of block 3,977,777, March 14th, 2021 the prior SolarCoin blockchain is no longer supported. Grants will be issued on the Energy Web Chain SolarCoin only. For further information regarding this change, please see this post.

Migrating your SolarCoin to the New Blockchain

Holders who have access to their wallets will be able to receive their balances on the new blockchain. A step-by-step guide is available for users of the SolarCoin Desktop Wallet as well as Coinomi.

Many common questions regarding the migration have been answered.

Please note that the chain was migrated based on the status at the specified block, any change in balance after block 3,977,777 will not be reflected on the Energy Web Chain. If your SolarCoin was held by an exchange at this block, please contact them. Exchanges have had their custody wallets migrated to the new blockchain and will be able to distribute accordingly.

Legacy software

The desktop wallet is still available for MacOS and Windows, as well as a source distribution. The desktop wallet retrieves an outdated version of the chain state, an updated chain synchronization file is available. Synchronizing the chain is not necessary to export private or public keys for migration.
